Turf War
2003

Print on Paper

banksyqr 450x2906.jpg

In Turf War, Banksy transforms an image of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill into a punk icon by giving him a green Mohican haircut. The work recalls the “Turf Wars” demonstrations of May 2000 in London, aligning the figure of Britain’s wartime leader with the rebellious spirit of counterculture.

Executed as a monochrome stencil with a bold grey wash, the piece juxtaposes the gravitas of political authority with the anti-establishment symbolism of the punk movement. In doing so, Banksy playfully questions the foundations of British identity and the reverence accorded to its leaders.

This screenprint was originally produced by Pictures on Walls (POW), a print house co-founded in 2003 by Banksy and others. POW became a pivotal platform for street artists, enabling them to sell editions directly to the public without dealer commissions, and helping to establish the legitimacy of urban art within the wider market.
