Rude Copper
2002
Print on Paper

One of the artist’s earlier works, Rude Copper, is a monochrome stencil depicting a British policeman giving the middle finger. The angle and perspective create the impression of an uncomfortably close and personal encounter. This was Banksy’s very first commercial print, released in 2002. As the title suggests, it is a provocative piece, with an effective use of depth of field that brings the extended hand and rude gesture into sharp focus. The work was produced as a silkscreen print in an edition of 200 unsigned pieces.
