Grannies
2006

Print on Paper

Grannies was first shown at Banksy’s landmark exhibition Barely Legal in Los Angeles. The print depicts two elderly women calmly knitting sweaters emblazoned with slogans such as “Punk’s Not Dead” a humorous inversion of stereotypes that aligns Banksy’s work with the irreverence of punk culture.

By juxtaposing the gentleness of grandmothers with the rebellious spirit of counterculture, Banksy undercuts generational clichés and questions assumptions about who embodies resistance. The work reflects both his own punk roots and the do-it-yourself ethos of street art.

At Barely Legal, the print was sold in an edition of 100 unsigned copies priced at $500 each, a deliberate decision to make the work more accessible and affordable for a wide audience.
