Toxic Mary
2003
Screen-print on Paper

Toxic Mary presents the Virgin Mary, cloaked in Renaissance-style drapery, feeding the infant Christ. Yet the bottle bears a skull and crossbones, transforming nourishment into poison. This unsettling juxtaposition critiques blind faith and institutional authority, while the dripping paint gives the impression of a sacred image dissolving before our eyes.
First exhibited at Turf War in London in 2003, the print was originally released at £150 (signed) and £74.99 (unsigned). In 2007, unique colourways were offered at Santa’s Ghetto in Bethlehem, priced at $10,000 and available only to visitors. These limited releases have cemented Toxic Mary as one of Banksy’s most provocative and sought-after prints.
