Grappling Hook
2017
Acrylic and shellac on wood, painted polyurethane, aluminum, steel

Grappling Hook emerged as the most iconic sculptural work from Banksy’s 2017 intervention at The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem. Conceived within a project that directly confronted the politics and physical presence of the West Bank separation wall, the piece stands as a sharp meditation on faith, conflict, and the machinery of division.
Described by the artist on Instagram as a “military grade grappling hook and combination spiritual ornament,” the sculpture fuses weaponry with religious iconography. A wooden crucifix, complete with a carved figure of Christ, is violently reimagined as a functional military climbing device, fitted with steel hooks and accompanied by heavy rope. The sacred object becomes a tool of breaching and scaling — a darkly comic yet deeply polemical gesture.
