Double Toxic Mary
2003
Print on Paper

Double Toxic Mary is a monumental variant of Banksy’s well-known motif. Set against a shimmering gold ground, the composition presents two mirrored images of the Virgin Mary cradling the infant Christ. Each figure feeds the child from an orange hazard bottle, while a rifle sight hovers above, adding a chilling undertone of threat.
The work formed part of Banksy’s first major exhibition, Turf War, staged in a disused warehouse in East London in 2003. The show was shut down by police after just two days, cementing its place in street art history as an early flashpoint in Banksy’s rise to notoriety
