Christ With Shopping Bags (Consumer
Jesus)
2004

Print on Paper

banksyqr 450x2906.jpg

Christ with Shopping Bags also known as Consumer Jesus is one of Banksy’s most striking critiques of consumerism. In place of the crucifix, Christ is shown suspended by his outstretched arms, clutching shopping bags filled with commercial goods. The image reconfigures one of Western culture’s most sacred symbols into a searing commentary on the commodification of faith and the intrusion of capitalism into the spiritual realm.

Only 82 screenprints of the work were produced, a rarity that adds to its significance. The edition size may allude to the year 1482, when the Flemish painter Hugo van der Goes died before completing Christ on a Cross. An original version of Christ with Shopping Bags was also discovered in the corner of Banksy’s Santa’s Ghetto pop-up shop in 2004, further underlining its place within his most provocative output.
