2010
Print on Paper

Choose Your Weapon presents Banksy’s hooded figure walking a stylised, cartoon-like dog rendered in the style of Keith Haring. Against a striking deep purple background, the monochrome figure appears faceless, his anonymity underscored by the lowered hood and covered mouth. The juxtaposition of a menacing youth “an emblem of urban unrest” with a playful, graffiti-inspired dog encapsulates Banksy’s ability to fuse humour with social critique.
The choice of purple as the backdrop adds an almost regal quality, heightening the contrast between the gritty, street-level subject matter and the vibrancy of the colour. By linking his imagery to Haring’s visual language, Banksy acknowledges the lineage of street art while asserting his own voice in the canon. Released in a limited screen print edition in 2010, this work has since become one of Banksy’s most recognisable commentaries on subculture, identity, and rebellion.
