Bombing Middle England
2000
Print on Canvas

Bombing Middle England first appeared as a mural in Banksy’s hometown of Bristol. The work shows elderly women engaged in a game of bowls though instead of using bowls, they hurl live grenades. With its mix of suburban humour and explosive menace, the piece exemplifies Banksy’s ability to turn everyday scenes into sharp social satire.
A unique version on wooden board, executed in spray paint and acrylic, was auctioned at Sotheby’s in 2007, achieving £102,000 twice its presale estimate and, at the time, a record for the artist. The screenprint edition is rare: only 50 signed impressions were produced, making it one of the more sought-after prints in Banksy’s catalogue.
