London, New York, Bristol is a spray-paint and acrylic on canvas work that highlights three cities of importance to Banksy: his hometown of Bristol, and two US cities where he has both created street pieces and staged exclusive installations. At the centre of the composition stands an elephant rendered in Banksy’s signature stencil style, a rocket strapped to its back. The imagery invites multiple interpretations, though it is most often understood as an anti-military statement, in keeping with Banksy’s wider body of work.
These three cities have served as key stages for Banksy’s blend of critique, humour, and provocation each a site where he has deployed his “heavy weapons” of creativity against societal norms and entrenched systems.
Since its creation, the piece has appeared at public auction only five times. Most recently, it sold at Bonhams London on 9 December 2020 for £312,750. Earlier, at Artnet Auctions in November 2017, it realised USD $168,000. Such results reflect both the demand for, and the value placed upon, Banksy’s socially conscious art.
