Roller Rat
2006
Print on Canvas

In Roller Rat, Banksy depicts one of his iconic rats armed not with spray paint but with a roller ironically cast as a graffiti remover. The work underscores the subversive contradictions of street art, where the very symbols of rebellion can also become agents of erasure. Roller Rat captures Banksy’s trademark wit, questioning artistic conventions and social expectations alike.
The motif has recurred throughout the artist’s career, most memorably at the 2009 Banksy vs Bristol Museum exhibition, where the same rat appears “censoring” a Damien Hirst spot painting.
